Claire Grainger || Photo by Louise Beattie PhotographyI’m Claire Grainger, the name and the face behind Grainger Public Relations.

Before launching my consultancy in 2007, I notched up a 10 year career in PR and journalism, honing my early skills as a broadcast journalist with Dundee station Radio Tay where I sourced, wrote and read the local, national and international news.

I then moved to Beattie Communications, one of Scotland’s most successful PR companies where, after working on a number of clients, I was seconded to the University of St Andrews. As well as generating good news through the media, and firefighting on several controversies, I played a key role in the institution’s internal communications.

Last but not least, I was heavily involved in Prince William’s four year spell at the University – deflecting unwanted and negative news attention, reinforcing the University’s reputation as a world-class educational institution and not just ‘Prince William’s University’, and dealing with a barrage of calls and inquiries 24/7.

My passion and career progression follow a Grainger family tradition, with our involvement in PR and photo-journalism dating back over 100 years. My great-grandfather was a photographer in the pioneering days and my grandfather was chief photographer/photo journalist with Aberdeen Journals. More recently, my uncle was Editor-in-Chief of the Highland News Group, worked for Scottish Television (STV), and also an award-wining press photographer. Last, but by no means least, my father John Grainger’s career was underpinned by publicity and promotional work.

Ten years on, I am focusing my efforts on Grainger PR and maximising my varied and impressive contacts list which covers everything from national broadcasters such as BBC, ITN and Channel 4 to environment, science, property and education correspondents, to local media and trade magazines, as well as a number of freelance journalists and agencies throughout the UK.

And it works. Grainger PR’s reputation was cemented when the business was voted finalist in the ‘Shooting Star’ category of the Women Ahead Awards 2010.
