Are you Sweet Enough? Food Glorious Food!
Published on 8 September 2016
Food – we love it, we need it, but do we understand it?
How much sugar is in your diet, compared to what you need? What’s in the food we eat? And can you guess the vegetable?
A menu of foods to sample, tests to try and experts to quiz will form the focus of ‘Meet the Expert: The Crunch’ at Dundee Science Centre 11am – 3pm on Saturday 10 September 2016, when visitors will explore where our food comes from and discover what the future holds for the way we consume.
During the drop-in event, experts will be on hand from The James Hutton Institute, RSPB Scotland and University of Dundee, amongst others.
‘Eaten from Inside Out’ will reveal how sap-sucking insects feed from plants, with researchers from The James Hutton Institute. They will also present ‘From Grain to Plate’, exploring the staple foods of Scotland from the neolithic to the present day.. Finally, The James Hutton Institute will literally unearth the ‘Roots of Nutrition’, where visitors can discover the role of roots in plants and challenge them to ‘guess the vegetable.’
Meanwhile, RSPB Scotland will encourage visitors to ‘Give Nature a Home’, giving a fascinating insight into bees, butterflies, pollination and how we can help wildlife in our gardens.
Finally, University of Dundee researchers will focus on ‘Food and Our Health’, when families can guess how much sugar is in their diet in comparison to what they actually need.
Visitors can also explore the incredible ingredients in some of the foods we eat with The Crunch Ambassador Lisa Forbes.
Dundee Science Centre will also be delivering The Crunch Family Show, The Crunch Bike, and other drop-in activities. The above events are all included as part of normal admission.
A limited number of free tickets are available through The Crunch project – please contact Dundee Science Centre regarding criteria – telephone 01382 228800.
‘Meet the Expert’ events take place on the second Saturday of each month throughout 2016 – please check the Dundee Science Centre website for upcoming events – www.dundeesciencecentre.org.uk. Dundee Science Centre is open daily from 10am-5pm.
Running at Dundee Science Centre until Friday 28 October 2016, The Crunch is a new Wellcome Trust initiative to get the nation talking about our food, our health and our planet.
