Designs on Architecture – Prestigious Award for Dundee Student

A Dundee Trainee Architectural Technician has been hailed the best Dundee and Angus College student of the year.

Allanah Ogilvie (19), who has worked with Andrew Black Design since embarking on a day-per-week work experience programme last March, has received ‘The Robertson Award for HND Architectural Technology Year 2’ for 2016/17.

Having now completed the HND, Allanah is working full-time with the city centre practice and, in September, will work four days a week with the remaining day spent at Edinburgh Napier University where she will start fourth year of what would normally be a six-year ‘BSc/BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology’ degree. At that point, she will be a qualified Architectural Technologist.

Allanah said, “This has been an amazing journey for me, and it’s great to be making progress on what is a lifelong ambition. I’m very proud of my College award and will be thrilled when I finally graduate with an honours degree in three years. I’d also like to thank my employers because working while at college was a real advantage, gaining practical experience in the theory I was learning in my course, and also gaining significant experience within the office that I could take back to college. As well as almost working full time during my University course, my skills will improve as my experience does which will hopefully lead to more tasks and more responsibility within what is a reputable and dynamic architects’ practice.”

At Andrew Black Design, Allanah works on a variety of tasks including site surveys which are required at the start of a job. Mainly working on the design stages of domestic projects, Allanah is now able to take a job from the survey to planning stage with minimum assistance.

Allanah added, “Being a small practice, Andrew Black Design has been very positive for me as it means I am working on a broad range of projects as well as being given lots of responsibility. I also work closely with Andrew and all other members of the team, which has helped boost my skillset and experience considerably.”

The College award is presented to the student on the basis of marks, attitude and attendance.

Andrew Black commented, “This is great news for the Allanah and we are extremely proud of her winning this award. At such a young age, this is great for her development and learning and highlights her passion and commitment towards Architecture. It’s always good when our staff do well so that we can continue to provide the best service to our clients. We look forward to aiding in her growth in the future.”

Established in 2002, Andrew Black Design is a design-led practice providing innovative and contemporary built solutions over a diverse portfolio of projects, including bespoke designs for new build and existing dwellings and commercial work such as office buildings, workshops, nightclubs and bar design. The practice recently won the Supreme Award from the Dundee Institute of Architects for its stunning design of Ladies Lake, St Andrews.
