DO Try This at Home!

From vinegar and candles to washing-up liquid, visitors to the Wellgate Shopping Centre can try out a host of science experiments this weekend, based on the products lurking in most of their kitchens.

After the overwhelming success of the first of the ‘Saturday Science Live’ free events at the end of July, Saturday 30 August will see Dundee Science Centre returning to the Wellgate, this time with their exciting hands-on ‘Curious Kitchen Science’ demonstration.

Taking place on Level 2 of the Wellgate (near BHS) between 1-4pm, ‘Saturday Science Live’ is aimed at both adults and children, and takes place on the last Saturday of every month. This weekend’s event will showcase a number of experiments, including the spinning plate challenge, where a plate becomes a ‘lab’ for exploring forces and encouraging visitors to swing a cup of water overhead without spilling water.  Meanwhile, the audience can make their own canister rockets, based on water and a common household ingredient-turned-rocket fuel!

Peter Aitken, Operations Manager, Wellgate Shopping Centre said, “We’re really excited to be hosting these live shows which are bringing science to our shoppers in a hands-on, fun and engaging way. This Saturday’s event will demonstrate experiments based on items which we all have in our homes, highlighting that science is not only accessible to all, but everywhere around us. Visitors can then try out the same experiments at home and amaze their families and friends in the process!”

Rebecca Erskine, Exhibition and Community Engagement Manager said, “After the success of the first event, which attracted 300 visitors, our team are really looking forward to returning to the Wellgate.  The prime focus of these events is sheer fun but the serious side is that, by taking science to the masses, we can hopefully hook their imagination and inspire a new generation about the wonders and intrigue of science as a whole.”

Visitors taking part in ‘Saturday Science Live’ will also be invited to give their feedback, with the added incentive to win £100 worth of shopping vouchers from a Wellgate Shop of their choice.
