Space Saturday Prepares to Welcome Tim Peake Home
Published on 10 June 2016
With just days until the first British astronaut in Space for over 20 years prepares to touch down back on Earth, a host of Space-themed activities are landing in Dundee to mark his return.
On Saturday 11 June 2016, exactly one week before Tim Peake returns from his six month voyage aboard the International Space Station, the wonders and fascination of life in Space will be showcased at Dundee Science Centre.
The event is part of the latest in a series of ‘Meet the Expert’ events at Dundee Science Centre, which run from 11am until 3pm.
Making the most of the sunshine, Dundee Astronomical Society will be inviting visitors to take a peek through a solar telescope and find out how the sun’s activity affects our daily lives. If the weather is cloudy, the society’s Tony Hayes will be bringing the sunshine inside with some amazing pictures of solar activity.
Meanwhile, take off your shoes and step onto a cosmic keyboard! University of St Andrews astronomy researcher Rita Tojeiro will be bringing the keyboard which will allow visitors to ‘hear’ the expansion of the Universe through the motions of distant galaxies. There will also be the chance to watch a 360 aurora movie and 360 space weather video thanks to Alex from Russell the University of Dundee, and enjoy some hands-on magnetism activities and solar movies.
In addition, a Cosmos Planetarium will be installed within the centre, alongside drop-in activities including the chance to try on a real space suit and, of course, the ever-popular ‘Destination Space’ family show will run regularly throughout the day.
Rebecca Erskine, Exhibition and Community Engagement Manger, Dundee Science Centre said, “Over the last few months, we, and hundreds of visitors, have had a brilliant time celebrating Tim Peake’s very important mission, and inspiring both adults and children to be more curious about space through the ‘Destination Space’ project. As Tim prepares to return to Earth, we thought it would be a fitting finale to engage and inspire family audiences with a space-themed Saturday, creating a real sense of pride throughout Dundee as Tim heads home.”
The event will run from 11am until 3pm on Saturday 11 June 2016. Normal admission costs apply.
‘Meet the Expert’ events are planned for the second Saturday of each month throughout 2016 – please check the Dundee Science Centre website for upcoming events – www.dundeesciencecentre.org.uk.
