Spirit of the Olympics – Huge Pool Table Arrives in Wellgate
Published on 4 July 2016
As thousands of athletes prepare to compete in the Rio Olympics, a host of record-breaking games have been lined up at Wellgate this summer, from a massive football pool table to a tricky jelly bean challenge!
Whatever the weather, there is a varied programme of free and child-friendly sporting activities, as well as things to make, do and learn.
Aimed at children up to the age of 12, events will take place on levels two and three (near BHS and New Look) from 11am until 4pm each Wednesday and Friday between Wednesday 6 July and Friday 12 August 2016.
Wednesdays will focus on record-breaking games (level two), with Fridays seeing countless mini-artists camp out in the Craft Tent on level three.
The sporting highlight, a combination of two great British loves, football and pool, is Snookball, a revolutionary team game for up to four players (shoes off please!) Measuring four by six metres, the giant pool table lets friends and families kick footballs into pockets instead of using a cue stick. All of the footballs look like standard billiard balls, but are larger and lighter, making the game suitable for even the youngest of visitors.
There is also the chance to beat the clock and secure your personal best, with some Olympian themed record-breaking games.
How many Lego bricks can you stack with your arm behind your back? How many jelly beans can you pick up with chopsticks? Can you balance a golf tee on a golf ball? With different challenges each week, get your name on the leader board and compete for a Cineworld family cinema ticket if you are still the champion at the end of the Summer.
Or if you are after something a little less energetic, there is also lots for craft-lovers, with a Craft Tent opening for business each Friday, packed with different activities each week.
Back by popular demand is Sand Art, colourful sand in shaped bottles to take home. There is also a ceramic zoo of animals to paint, decorate and take home, decoupage and paper plate art.
