‘The Science of Sport’, a ‘Meet the Expert’ event at Dundee Science Centre, will see local experts reveal the fascinating science which can clinch (or end) every Gold medal winner’s dream.

How fast can you go? How do you match up to elite athletes? Partake in a University of Abertay power test using a state-of- the-art ‘Wattbike’, the official training bike of the Olympic team, and find out. The test, led by Ashley Richardson, lecturer in Biomechanics at the Division of Sport and Exercise, will task visitors to cycle to the max for short bursts, providing data on how hard they can power and how they compare to Olympians.

Meanwhile, Dr Audrey Duncan, Sports Science Manager and Helen Weavers, Sport and Exercise Physiologist (both based at the Institute of Sport and Exercise of Dundee) will test visitors’ strength and power. Activities will include a vertical jump test (used by athletes to assess both strength and power), with children and adults competing against each other and Olympic athlete scores to see how powerful and strong their legs are.

Dundee Science Centre staff will also be running ‘Science in a Sports Kit’ activities on the day, offering visitors a chance to have a go at testing their speed, strength and stamina by taking part in fun activities while discovering the impact of what we put into our bodies.

Calum McAndrew, Exhibition and Community Engagement Officer at Dundee Science Centre said, “With most of the country glued to their television screens watching the cream of the nation’s sporting talent, we’re giving our visitors a piece of the action. As well as stirring up some enthusiasm and motivation for fitness, we’ll explore the crucial science needed to clinch an Olympic medal. Whatever your fitness, come along and test yourself against your friends and family – you could be fitter than you think!”

The above events are all included as part of normal admission.

‘Meet the Expert’ events take place on the second Saturday of each month throughout 2016 – please check the Dundee Science Centre website for upcoming events –   Dundee Science Centre is open daily from 10am-5pm. For further information, please telephone 01382 228800 or visit the website.
