Top Marks for Dundee Nursery Staff Training

A Dundee nursery is striving for top marks, with increased investment in staff training.

The Teddy Bear Club Nursery is challenging its team with a new and improved variety of innovative courses which will greatly benefit the children in its care, covering everything from allergies and dealing with seizures to improved numeracy training.

Susan Gorman, Nursery Manager said, “Our team is everything to us and it’s essential that we invest in our staff, not only to arm them with the best skillset available but to ensure the very best standard of care for the children. We also want to retain our staff, support their professional development and attract staff with an eagerness to keep learning and improving throughout their careers, working with a huge range of local professionals in the process.”

The nursery’s increased training budget is a result of it joining the Busy Bees group – the leading UK day care nursery provider – in September 2016 and has recently funded courses in everything from first aid training to the ‘ABC and Beyond’ literacy course.

Indeed, 75% of staff have attended training in ‘ABC and Beyond’ and this is currently being used as part of the nursery’s annual improvement plan. Following on from this training, further training was accessed through Dundee Education Psychology Service. This involves the staff recording a planned literacy activity with children and then reflecting on the video with their peers with the support of Educational Psychologist Jill Nixon.

Every member of the nursery’s permanent staff currently working with children are also now trained in the emergency protocols for seizures and the treatment of acute allergic reactions. Meanwhile, 78% of permanent staff hold current first aid training with a further 22% scheduled to complete this by the end of the year.

Of course, this training complements the team’s qualifications. At present, 100% of Teddy Bear Club Nursery staff who work with children have a recognised childcare qualification, 93% of whom are qualified early years practitioners. The remaining staff are qualified to SVQ level 2 or working towards SVQ level 3. A small number (3%) are university graduates, having completed a BA Childhood Practice.

The Teddy Bear Club provides childcare and education for children up to school age. For more information, please telephone 01382 641577 or visit website
