As one of Dundee’s two main shopping centres, Wellgate has enjoyed a strong presence within the city centre since 1978.
Wellgate is home to a number of value-led retailers including New Look, The Perfume Shop, Home Bargains and Claire’s, not forgetting national store T J Hughes which opened its doors in October 2018.
However, there is more to Wellgate than shopping.
As well as a brand new gym, which opened in Summer 2018, the centre is proud to be a community hub, with a vibrant events calendar ranging from exhibitions to public performances attracting new and diverse audiences into the centre.
Events aside, there are many other reasons to pop in – Welfare Reform, for example, have an open service in the centre each Friday, reporting higher usage numbers than other sites where they operate. Wellgate also offers information sites to a number of NHS, welfare and family support organisations as points of contact for people throughout the local community.
Grainger PR was approached by the Wellgate management team in 2015 to assist with media relations, with the initial remit being to promote the many events, both collaborative and Wellgate-led, which take place throughout the year.
I also delivered a full-day media training session to the management team in conjunction with Gary Robinson of Gary Robinson Communications.
Peter Aitken, former Centre Manager commented, “It was identified that, as a small shopping centre management team, there was a need to develop the skills to deliver media messages. Situations arise unexpectedly and the team need to deliver concise responses at a moment’s notice.
“Having worked with Gary and Claire, we asked them to help us put in place a strategy which would equip us to improve our presentation and delivery of on-the-spot interviews with media streams – for example, newspapers and live situations in radio and television.
“Following some meetings with Gary and Claire to identify what we needed, spending time with us to learn what we face, they built a course which entailed a full-day in the studio. Scenarios covered were very real to our work environment. Their support was fantastic, feedback was superb and we ended the day feeling much more confident. We’d highly recommend this duo for any PR and communication needs.”
Peter Aitken, former Centre Manager, Wellgate commented, “We are delighted to be working with Claire who, thanks to her many years of experience, is a safe pair of hands when dealing with the media. Not only does Claire publicise the many positive events and activities taking place within Wellgate, but helps us pinpoint new opportunities to promote. Claire is also reliable and trustworthy, and ready to assist us in reacting to more pressing and sensitive issues. We are very glad to have her on board, and look forward to working with her as Wellgate evolves in the months and years ahead.”
