Dundee ‘Access to Nursing’ Students Explore Mental Health Film

A group of Dundee and Angus College nursing students took part in a national mental health roadshow earlier this week (Monday 5 November 2018).

As part of the ‘Foolish Optimism’ roadshow, students from the ‘Access to Nursing’ course watched the short film which was launched in Dundee last month, and discussed the importance of mental health and its role in their future careers. The students are hoping to begin their nursing training in 2019/20, with some following the adult nursing route and others entering the mental health nurse training course at either the University of Dundee or Abertay.

Arts Festival Takes Over Wellgate

NEoN digital arts festival is planning to take over the Wellgate shopping centre in Dundee next week.

Artists Alan Holmes and Alan Taylor from Manchester, known professionally as AL and AL, will be transforming Unit 26A – formerly the Iceland store – into a high-end art gallery with their show Down The Rabbit Hole. It will include a new piece entitled ‘The Immaculate Conception of Isaac Newton Production’, involving apples suspended in the act of falling.

Meanwhile, Weave by Abertay will  be taking over vacant retail units nine to eleven on the second floor on behalf of NEoN, with their group show ‘Lifespans: Forever And Ever’. An exploration of the expansive and endless nature of our digital lives, it will include work by Cassie McQuater, Hadi Mehrpouya & Robert Powell, Tale of Tales, and Marius Watz.

Local Toddlers Explore the Sound of Music

Local toddlers will have the chance to become little musicians during brand new activities in Dundee this week.

As part of its Early Explorers programme, Dundee Science Centre is inviting children aged three to five years old to take part in a number of fun, hands-on activities and games linked to music on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 November 2018.

The ‘Little Musicians’ activities will complement the highly interactive ‘Music Mayhem exhibition’ which will continue to welcome visitors until Sunday 4 November 2018.

Dundee High-Flyer Becomes Scotland’s First Flying Graduate to Secure Pilot Post

A Dundee aviation enthusiast, who has been flying since the age of 14, has become Scotland’s first flying graduate to land a post with the largest independent regional airline in Europe.

Dundee-born Gavin Ritchie (24) is one of the first batch of 53 students who will graduate from Tayside Aviation’s BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation Pilot Practice degree at Middlesex University in June 2019.

Having now completed the degree, the first of its kind available in Scotland, Gavin has become the first graduate to land a pilot post. Due to the fast-track nature of the degree, Gavin could be on course to become a Captain within two years.

Posters of Positivity: Mental Health Campaign Takes to the Streets of Dundee

A city-wide poster campaign, featuring images and words relating to mental health, is to be unleashed on the streets of Dundee next month.

As part of the ‘Foolish Optimism’ roadshow, two young women are taking art workshops out into the community, encouraging a range of different groups to talk about, and document, their mental health stories.

Last night, Wednesday 24 Octoer 2018, they held their first two-day session with Girls’ Group at Arthurstone Library.
