Cool Refurbishment of Award-Winning Gelateria

The best ice-cream shop in Scotland is set to become even better with a stunning refurbishment.

Jannettas Gelateria, which has been operating from its original St Andrews site since 1908, is officially Scotland’s favourite ice-cream shop, having scooped the 2014 Golden Cone award in the Summer of 2014 and, more recently, The Courier Retail Business of the Year award last month.

With works starting after Christmas, it is hoped that the transformed premises, with their brand new Italian café style interior, will re-open for business in mid-late February 2015.

The facelift, which has been designed by Broughty Ferry architects Nicoll Russell Studios, is mainly focused on creating a more fluid customer experience, removing the wall between what is currently the Gelateria and the café.

There will also be increased production space to meet the demand for the highly sought-after award-winning gelato, as well as a space where customers can see ice-cream being made, particularly during events and demonstrations. Imported Italian cabinets will also be incorporated, showcasing everything from ice-cream cakes to gelato pops and patisseries.

Meanwhile, Andy Baxter, Partner, Nicoll Russell Studios added, “Our early interviews with Owen and Nicola illustrated how passionate they were about their business and its history. We responded to this by developing a unique concept for the promotion of traditional Italian gelato and a space to appreciate the art of its creation in front of customers and event audiences, ultimately providing a window into Italian culture and history.”

As well as creating a more fluid customer space, the refurbishment will incorporate a new and improved café, the perfect environment in which to enjoy Jannettas ice-cream and other produce from patisseries and coffees to authentic Italian sodas mixed on site from imported syrups and carbonated water.

To celebrate the Jannettas brand, a backdrop will also be created based on a collage of the Jannettas family’s photographic archive, illustrating the fascinating history behind the business and its evolution for future generations.
