A multi-million pound exhibition on the top floor of Dundee Science Centre has won a prestigious design award.
The £2.1M Medical Marvels exhibition and Science Learning Suite won the ‘Exhibition’ category of the Scottish Design Awards. The award was presented to Dundee architects Aim Design and Dundee Science Centre at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow last week.
Medical Marvels, which opened last Summer, celebrates the past, present and future of medical science. Throughout the space, seamless materials and feature lighting are used to create a sleek, futuristic environment. A path of spherical white blood-cell lights follow the visitor pathway, pulsing in a red wave along the direction of travel. Visitors encounter a range of historic surgical instruments before testing their reflexes against a biomarker batak game, challenging their keyhole coordination with laparoscopic tools and learning about ultrasound and MRI technology. The final presentation space concludes the experience by speculating on developments that may occur in the future through a number of practical, interactive anatomical models.
Aim Design, based in the city’s Camperdown Street, have also been appointed to provide a full range of architectural and exhibition design services to the CONNECT project which will transform the ground floor of the visitor attraction as it approaches its 20th birthday in 2020. Works are due to commence in Spring 2020, with the project due to be officially unveiled by March 2021.
Rebecca Duncan, Head of Development, Dundee Science Centre said, “We are delighted that Medical Marvels has been awarded a Scottish Design Award for the exhibition category. We would like to extend huge congratulations to Aim Design and their team of talented designers – their dedication and passion for the project is evident in the final result which has truly transformed our first floor experience. We are also proud to continue working alongside Aim’s team to design and develop the next stage in Dundee Science Centre’s evolution, the CONNECT project, which will see us redevelop the ground floor.”
Ged Young, Director at Aim Design said, “We are absolutely thrilled to have received such fantastic recognition for our design of Medical Marvels which has proved a real turning point in Dundee Science Centre’s journey as a visitor attraction and community resource. We are now looking forward to the next stage of the Centre’s development as we get to work transforming the design of the ground floor.”
The Scottish Design Awards are a nationally recognised and unique annual design awards event, created to appreciate and celebrate the best of Scottish design and architecture in all its forms. Now in their 22nd year, the awards have grown to become the established design awards in the country thanks to a unique blend of stellar design and an ethos of openness which embraces the wider design community in its broadest sense, drawing people from practices big and small.
