A Braw Dundee Summer!

Dundee’s rich food heritage will take centre stage this summer as a local charity unveils its free programme of family holiday activities.

Based at The Roundhouse Café in Lothian Crescent, Whitfield, Signpost International is offering six weeks of hands-on sessions celebrating Dundee’s culinary traditions, past and present.

Families will have the chance to make everything from tattie scones and haggis sausage rolls to the Dundee Pea Buster – one of the city’s oldest and most iconic street foods.

Wherever possible, all food will be prepared using surplus ingredients collected by Signpost International from supermarkets, greengrocers, bakers and local allotments.

Kicking off today (Wednesday 8 July), local children transformed surplus oranges into marmalade cake while discovering the city’s world-famous jam-making heritage.

Alongside cooking and baking, families will explore Dundee’s history, culture and folklore through a wide range of creative activities. Sessions include crafts inspired by the Dundee Dragon, Scottish sing-alongs, boats and pirates, mural-making, poetry, drama, weaving, trying on clothing from the 1800s to learn about Dundee’s jute industry, and Highland coo-themed art.

The programme is supported by a range of local partners, including Dundee Contemporary Arts, Elfie Picket Theatre, Fisher and Donaldson, Heart Space, How It Felt, National Literacy Trust, RRS Discovery and Verdant Works.

The free activities will run from 10am to 1pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays from Wednesday, 8 July, until Thursday, 13 August 2026. All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout each session.

Steph Dolan, Education and Community Worker at Signpost International, said, “Once again, we can’t wait to welcome families through our doors this summer. With a focus on Dundee, we believe this is our best programme yet, with something to appeal to every age and interest.

“Food has the power to really connect people and, as well as inspiring families to cook and bake at home using foods that might otherwise go to waste, we’ll also shine a light on some of the city’s food traditions, historical stories and local legends.”
