Community Fridge Rescues Surplus Food
A new community fridge has opened in Dundee, giving local people the chance to buy surplus food and prevent it from going to waste.
The fridge at The Roundhouse, Lothian Crescent, opens every Wednesday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, with registration available from 1.30pm in the café area.
Each week, a range of frozen, store cupboard and dried goods will be available. For a £2 donation, visitors can choose eight items on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to stock levels. Items, provided by Fareshare, may include meat, bread, fruit, cakes, vegetables, alongside essential household products such as sanitary items.

Funded by Hubbub, the community fridge is part of a broader wraparound community space at The Roundhouse, which includes a café and garden.

As Jamie Morrison, CEO of Signpost International, said, “Almost all of the food in the community fridge comes from surplus stock that would otherwise be destined for landfill. This is about reducing food waste, rescuing perfectly good food, and making it affordable. We want to ensure surplus food doesn’t end up in landfill, and our community fridge is a simple, practical way to do that.
“However, the community fridge isn’t just about food, it’s about providing a friendly space to chat, connect and be part of a caring community. Whether you’d like to reduce food waste, make your money go further, or simply enjoy some company, our doors are open. Let’s build community, reduce waste, and support each other.”
Over the past four years, Signpost International has successfully prevented over 29 tonnes of food from going to waste, demonstrating the impact that small community actions can have on the environment.
Volunteers are welcome to help run the community fridge and support the project. For more information, please phone (01382) 504033, email enquiries@signpost-international.org or visit https://signpost-international.org/
