Double your Donation for Ugandan School Girls
A Dundee charity has been selected to take part in a fundraising campaign that will see donations doubled for one week only.
Signpost International, based at The Roundhouse in Dundee, is raising much-needed funds to help vulnerable girls and young women in rural Uganda gain the skills, confidence and opportunities they need to build brighter futures. The campaign is built on the charity’s view that everyone deserves the opportunity to fulfil their potential regardless of where they are born.
From 22-29 June, any donations made through the charity’s page on the Big Give website will be doubled by Big Give.
While rooted in Dundee, Signpost International supports communities worldwide. Through global partnerships, the charity empowers people to tackle poverty and injustice, helping to build thriving, resilient communities. Its work focuses on four key themes: food security, sustainable livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene, and global citizenship, impacting 30,000 to 35,000 people annually.
The charity’s Big Give campaign will help increase the number of children who reach the end of primary school in Uganda’s Nebbi District from 6% to 20%, opening up greater opportunities for education, employment and independence.
Many girls face barriers caused by extreme poverty, limited livelihood opportunities and harmful gender norms. Underage marriage is common, and 39% of girls become mothers within a year of leaving school, increasing inequality and poverty.
Building on an existing support model in the area, the project uses a two-part approach. First, it will train and equip out-of-school girls and young women with tailoring, business, and life skills to help them earn an income. Secondly, it will support girls at risk of dropping out by encouraging them to stay in school. This work will be supported by community advocacy campaigns that promote girls’ education and challenge harmful gender norms.
