Marvellous Motion

A brand new interactive show is coming to Dundee Science Centre, bringing collisions, gravity and friction to life.

Launching on Saturday, 4 April 2026, FACT or FICTION: Marvellous Motion is a gameshow-style experience where children and families can spin a giant wheel to choose from a series of high-energy, hands-on physics demos.

Audiences will be amazed as the tablecloth is pulled from under cups and plates without moving them, showing the power of inertia.  They can hop onto a mini hovercraft powered by a leaf blower, gliding effortlessly over a thin film of air and discovering how friction can be reduced. Meanwhile, they can watch as a cup of water spins overhead, defying expectations thanks to centripetal force, just like a rollercoaster keeps riders safely in their seats.

Other demonstrations explore gravity, air resistance, angular momentum, and torque, giving kids and families a front-row seat to the mechanics of the world around them.

Jill Farrell, CEO, said, “We’ve lined up a range of fun and hands-on demos that explain why the impossible happens, and it’s all down to physics. Physics is the reason rollercoasters don’t fling you off, why you don’t sink through your chair, and why water can stay in a cup swung overhead.

“Marvellous Motion is full of intrigue, surprises and ‘aaaahhhh…’ moments where the science behind the demos becomes clear.  Visitors can make predictions, see the outcomes in real time and then learn the science behind things that, on the surface, seem impossible.”
