The Business of Sound
From hiring mics to Dundee amateur dramatics societies and local primary schools, to providing the sound requirements for West End shows and iconic, national rock tours, a Dundee sound company is celebrating its recent 21st anniversary with ‘significant growth’.
Paul Smith bought Apex Acoustics from former Radio Tay presenter Graeme Adamson in 1994, venturing into business ownership as a one-man band at the age of just 22.
With turnover rising from £68,000 to £600,000, the company, which is based at the city’s Taygate Trading Estate, now employs five staff.
And, with two contracts worth £350,000 recently secured for as-yet ‘top-secret’ high-profile projects next year and the recent appointment of Project Manager Sean Quinn, the company is aiming high.
Specialising in digital audio systems and radio microphones for theatre productions, music and live events, Apex Acoustics supplies professional sound hire, design, sales and installation services across Scotland and the UK. The company is also Scotland’s exclusive dealer for both Meyer Sound Loudspeakers and DiGiCo Consoles.
This year, the company has been responsible for the sound at a huge array of concerts and events, ranging from West End and BBC Radio Scotland shows to Linlithgow music festival Party at the Palace. The team also installed a permanent sound system at Strathallan School in Perthshire and worked with local authorities, universities and hotels across the country.
With 45 loudspeakers and eight mixing consoles across the site, Apex Acoustics also, for the 30th year running, recently provided sound requirements for Dundee Flower and Food Festival. The Apex Acoustics van and kit also toured the country with fashion guru Gok Wan’s Brunch Club as well as providing sound and lighting for the Glamis Prom.
With Winter approaching, the team is now preparing for a host of local events including Dundee’s Remembrance Day, Glamis Castle Halloween celebrations and Christmas Light Night events.
Paul said, “Over the last 21 years, we have built a reputation for quality, both in the equipment itself and optimum customer service. By continually investing in and adding to our rental stock, and ensuring that staff are trained to the highest level, we are committed to providing the very best and the most appropriate equipment for our clients’ events.
“With Dundee very much on the up, it’s a city under the microscope and it’s crucial that, collectively, we get things right. We know all too well that poor sound can ruin an event and the customer’s experience so it’s important that our events remain the best they can be.”
