Ukrainian Families Enjoy Science Fun

Around 20 Ukrainian refugees and their children have enjoyed a special visit to Dundee Science Centre.

Organised with support from the Scottish Refugee Council and funded by the Scottish Government, the group of mums, dads and children came from Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perth.

Father Serhii Kuzminov, who now works in Dundee said, “We were so grateful to be invited to this event at Dundee Science Centre. It was a wonderful experience for all those who attended. We really value and appreciate visitor attractions that take this important step to help build cohesive communities and foster a sense of belonging for all refugees.”

As part of the visit, families enjoyed making rainbows and yellow and blue volcanic experiments to signify the colours of Ukraine.

The visit took place during Scotland’s Refugee Week, a festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. The Science Centre is now distributing free visit vouchers to refugees who could not attend on the day.

George Wickenden, Marketing and Audience Development Advisor, Dundee Science Centre said, “Encouraging scientific curiosity and inclusivity is at the heart of what we do. Being able to offer free events like this one for Ukrainian refugees living in Scotland is a truly rewarding opportunity and we hope it represents a positive step towards empowering more individuals, irrespective of their background, to explore the wonders of science.”

Ruby Seber of the Scottish Refugee Council added, “We are really grateful for institutions like Dundee Science Centre who proactively welcome families from a refugee background into their space. Events like this during Refugee Week are so important to get the local community together, celebrate the diversity of people in the city and show support for those who have recently arrived in the area. There are many groups and organisations supporting refugee integration in Dundee and it is great that Dundee Science Centre is one of them.’
