Refurbished Gelateria Opens On Owner’s 21st Anniversary

The owner of Scotland’s best ice-cream shop got ‘the key to the door’, as he opened the doors of his newly refurbished Gelateria on what is also his 21st anniversary in business.

Owen Hazel and his wife Nicola were ‘delighted, excited and relieved’ to be opening the doors of the brand new look Jannettas Gelateria, South Street, St Andrews which has been closed since the turn of the year while undergoing a major transformation.

The opening coincides with Owen’s 21st year in business as the co-owner of Jannettas, having joined the business after his marriage to Nicola in 1994.

The facelift, which was designed by Broughty Ferry architects Nicoll Russell Studios, aimed to create a more fluid customer experience, removing the wall between the former Gelateria and café.

With its new Italian café style interior, there is now increased production space to meet the demand for the highly sought-after award-winning gelato, as well as a space where customers can see ice-cream being made, particularly during events and demonstrations.

Showcasing 54 different flavours, two more than previously, imported Italian cabinets have also been incorporated, showcasing everything from ice-cream cakes to gelato pops and patisseries.  As well as creating a more fluid customer space, the refurbishment also incorporates a new and improved café, the perfect environment in which to enjoy Jannettas ice-cream and other produce from patisseries and coffees to authentic Italian sodas mixed on site from imported syrups and carbonated water.

An eye-catching backdrop has also been created based on a collage of the Jannettas family photographic archive, illustrating the fascinating history behind the business and its evolution for future generations.

Jannettas Gelateria, which has been operating from its original St Andrews site since 1908, is officially Scotland’s favourite ice-cream shop, having scooped the 2014 Golden Cone award in the Summer of 2014 and, more recently, The Courier Retail Business of the Year late last year.
