Tay’s Anatomy

While growing numbers pop into Dundee Science Centre to gain a better understanding of their recent operation or procedure, a celebration of Dundee’s expertise in developing medical technologies will take place in the city this weekend (Saturday 8 September 2018).

In what will be the first ‘Meet the Expert’ event in Dundee Science Centre’s brand new Medical Marvels exhibition space, ‘Tay’s Anatomy’ will see a range of local scientists and other professionals gather to showcase the skills they use on a daily basis to improve patients’ health and wellbeing.

The event will take place within the apt surroundings of the recently unveiled space which saw the top floor of Dundee Science Centre completely transformed into a realistic and futuristic take on medical innovations, with the chance to try your hand at a virtual operation and autopsy, ultrasound and keyhole surgery, or find your own veins with the laser vein-finder.

Experts in attendance on Saturday will include Mary Ballantyne, who worked as a theatre nurse and helped to develop instruments used today by surgeons during keyhole surgery, and Ayman Mustafa, an anaesthetist who works on projects to develop new technologies in the field.

Heather Gordon, Public Engagement Officer, Dundee Science Centre said, “Since unveiling Medical Marvels in July, we have heard from many visitors who have left the centre knowing a little a bit more about a recent procedure they experienced, whether it was a pacemaker being fitted, an ultrasound scan or major operation. Having this opportunity to explore that further with some local experts should make for a fantastic event!

“So many innovations and technologies which we all take for granted were pioneered right here in Dundee and, with this fantastic new space which was shaped with input from local scientists and surgeons, it’s particularly apt that our first ‘Meet the Expert’ event takes place within the new exhibition space.”

The event will run from 10am until 5pm and is included as part of normal admission to the centre, including the highly interactive ‘Music Mayhem’, which takes visitors on a voyage of musical discovery on the ground floor.
